Reader’s Question:

I am planning a cross-country trip with my friends, and we’re getting a rental car here in Arizona. Do we need to get car insurance for that?

Mimi

Scottsdale, AZ

Good day to you, Mimi. Before plunging into car insurance premiums you actually do not need, I think it is best that you first review fully what you need and what you do not. We often make mistakes by getting additional protection that we think we need but do not know that we already have, or sometimes we assume we already have but in reality we do not. Not mentioning the fact that these additional car rental insurance premiums cost a lot, adding roughly $30 to $50 a day on your trip expenses.

Even if one is only renting cars, like what you are planning to do with your friends, the car insurance premium of the driver might already have coverage for that. Also, you will most likely use your credit card to pay for the car rental, and these credit cards, as we all know, have supplementary insurance that go with them. So, better check with your car insurance provider in Arizona and your credit card company first before embarking on this fun-filled trip with your friends because you probably already have the coverage that you are looking for. However, you may want to get a loss damage waiver. It switches liability over from the driver of the rented car to the rental car company. Have a fun and safe trip.

Reader’s Question:

Last summer when I had my vacation in Coconino, Arizona . I attempted to rent a car but I was not able to get any insurance for the reason that I am below 25 years old. Since I started driving, my record is clean and thank God I was never been involve to any accidents. So, what’s their purpose or reason for denying my application?

Michael

Coconino, AZ

Sorry Michael!

Reaching the age of what we call the magical age is really fun, you are allowed to get your auto insurance and start traveling where ever you want to go. For young drivers which 18 – 24 years old you are restricted to get an auto insurance due to the fact that drivers at your age do not posses the best driving records. In Arizona auto insurance records would show that drivers at your age are the most involve in serious road accidents, and auto insurance companies hate this kind of records, it’s too risky for them.

When drivers turn 25 years old (magical age) the rates of their premiums decreases significantly, but you need to put this in your mind that lower rates are not only comes with age. There are several elements that make up the rates of a premium such as make and model of the car, age, driving history, and etc. This element that comprises the rate will be evaluated by the auto insurance companies and come up with your premium.

Sorry to say that you are not the only under 25 years old who experiences this kind of situation in Arizona.  Just continue taking care of your good driving history and who knows how much discounts you can get at the age of 25. You can compare rates in your area by typing your zip code on the relevant form found on any insurance site like this one.
